Prize Giving Day Performance

Danced at the preview of the Prize Giving Day performance today. So tired... Congrats to all prize winners!!! Have to wake up at 5:30am on Friday and reach school by 6:45am to dress up for performance later. I have to sleep early tomorrow but I'll miss the Chinese drama, Daddy At Home.Ending this post here. Will post again on the Prize Giving Day (Friday).

Reflection On SA2

The SA2 papers were okay, I guess... Chinese open ended passage was quite hard. English was quite easy. Maths was okay but more problem sums were added to this year's paper. I feel that my english can get around 42/48. Overall I think my results are quite okay. Just very anxious about the results and what about class placings??? Hope to get in the top 10 in class. If my results are good then I will aim for top 5. If my results are really good... How about top 3 and level placings??? I am going to study harder for next year's CAs and SAs... I read more of Reader Digest's Sherlock Holmes books; interesting yet the english is very advanced. I picked up a few new words from those books but have yet the find the meaning. Maybe I'll study the dictionary the next time. For Maths I will do more assessments books.

My favourite game is.... er.... Maple Story? I don't play computer everyday, but if I do play, I am limited to about 1 and a half hours. I am not sure if it has affected my daily routine... I ask him/her why he/she likes to play so much. What is the use of playing the game? Would it let you pass your exams with flying colors? No, you are just wasting your time thinking that sucess comes without hard work. Maybe he/she would come to his/her senses.

Yes, I think the Mathematics and English paper tested me fairly, but the Mother Tongue and Science paper did not. Honestly, I don't know.^_^ No, I don't think I have done well in this semester. I think I have not done enough preperations for this semester. Yes, they help me understand the concepts of subject. ~~I do not have tution~~.*Update~ I have tution for Mathematics and Chinese. Yes, I am prepared for the exam. For science, I read my Science Booster Notes from time to time. For English, I read more storybooks, revise what I have learnt and do more exam papers/assessment books. For Mathematics, I just simply do more sums and revise the tactics and methods used in solving problems. Yes, as I said earlier, I revise all topics, methods and tactics including topics that are not tested. I just want to be ready if a surprise question pops out and I know exactly what to do.

Earth Day

Yes, to me, Earth Day is a campaign in which encourages the world to make an effort to save the planet. I understand that the phrase "save the world" is to reuse, reduce and recycle. It is important because if we do not reuse, reduce and recycle, our planet will not live very long from this day onwards. I can prevent littering by picking up litter and not picking up the habit myself. I personally think that the National Environment Agency should add more recycle bins to public places, such as playgrounds, parks etc. My mind is blank right now....... But I promise I will come out with something...... Except not now? =.= *Update! ~ I have not came up with something~

ASEAN stands for Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Yes, I know quite alot about ASEAN as I watch the news every night.Yes, I know alot more about ASEAN after participating in the activities.No, I do not know anyone from another country. I think teh school should organise more immersion-ship programs not only with China, but with other ASEAN countries.

Malicious PC worm may strike on tomorrow (Wednesday, April 1 2009)

A Government information security watchdog has issued a a warning for people to take precautions against a fast-mutating malicious computer programme, which is poised to strike tomorrow.
worm, known as In a bulletin sent out yesterday, the Singapore Computer Emergency Response Team (SingCert) warned that the latest variant of the ConfickerConficker.C, may "become active on April 1".
SingCert, a unit of technology sector regulator inforcomm Development Authority, identifies information security threats and coordinates computer security responses to events like hacking attacks.
Confiker targets computers running Microsoft Windows software, automatically jumping from one computer to another over a local network or by drives. Only computers that have not been updated with new security signatures are vulnerable.
The worm is one of the more sophisticated programs developed to date. Earlier versions of such programs were easily found and removed, but Conficker's creator regularly comes up with improved versions of the worm to foil efforts to remove it. The creator remains at large despite a US$250,000 ($377,000) bounty put up by Microsoft.
The newest variant, Conficker.C, the fourth generation of the worm since it was first discovered late last year, disables security features like Microsoft Windows' automatic update.
One of Conficker's key features is its ability to call up a "master computer" via the Internet for directions. This feature is present in an improved form in its latest variant. And tomorrow, Conficker.C infected computers will do just that, SingCert warned, although "the exact nature of the activity that will occur ... is not known at this time".
Mr Paul Ducklin, security company Sophos' Asia-Pacific head of technology, said that while it is possible "nothing will happen (tomorrow), it is also possible that something will happen and you'd wish you did something about it today". And even nothing happens tomorrow, he added, it does not mean that Conficker cannot strike on May 1 and is instructed to, say, erase your computer.
Since its release, Conficker has claimed more than 10 million victims worldwide, including computers used by the British Parliament.

Earth Day

Earth Day commences on 28th of March. On this day, we conserve energy and water supply. This year, from 8.30am - 9.30am, we stop all use of energy and water. Thus, conserving more energy and water in this period of time as all Singaporeans stop the use of electricity and water. Some useful tips: Use torches and candles for light and as for updates on the news, use battery-powered radios. Your can also play games with family members, have bonding time with your family as on weekdays, most of our parents are busy with work. "Why should I conserve energy and water?" ~ Global warming is taking over our beloved Earth ~ Otherwise known as Gaia. Although conserving energy and water will not improve the state of Earth, but it will delay the take over of Global Warming. If we take the consistent supply of electricity and water for granted, it will be doom day for every living thing on the planet Earth. Weather on Earth will be unpredictable. It may even snow for the first time in Singapore! Maybe the north pole will have the sun all to itself. And the iceberg will melt and all the countries on Earth will become swimming pools! We sure don't want that to happen! So make a difference! Save our beloved Earth!

"Ouch!" ~ All about my poor injured toe!=(

Hi all! Have injured my toe during the holidays. Actually it's not really injured, but there is a cut under my right big toe! It's not painful but I cannot wear shoes for one week (maybe longer). Here's the what really happened today: I was cutting my nails today, with my mother beside me (also cutting). All was fine and peaceful when she realized that the cut on my toe had not recovered. Since it was 2.50pm, most clinics or almost all were not open as some closed at 12.00, some at 1.00, and some at 2.00. So my mother thought of the hospital near our school. There was a Accident and Emergency clinic there (as far as my mother remembered). And so we set off.......... We went into the hospital and soon found out that "so called" emergency clinic had closed down long ago as business was not good. Maybe there was only one patient a day or even worse! Then we approached the security guard. He gave us this piece of paper that had a few 24 hour clinic's address and contact number. We went to this clinic called Healthway. The next part is not........... ~Viewer Discretion~......... Consultation fee: $25.00
Then after seeing: $56.00 OMG! You may think it's because of the medicine but unfortunately not. I only received an extra small tube of cream and a bottle of antibiotics.That costs 31 bucks? And I am forgetting something ~ After hours consultation fee...... Let's say that is $10.00. So it's 21 bucks for medicine. And no list of what medicine and how much. I never will go there again! A rip-off!

Why is the sky blue?

On a clear sunny day, the sky above us looks bright blue. In the evening, the sunset puts on a brilliant show of reds, pinks and oranges. Why is the sky blue? What makes the sunset red?
To answer these questions, we must learn about light, and the Earth's atmosphere.
THE ATMOSPHERE
The atmosphere is the mixture of gas molecules and other materials surrounding the earth. It is made mostly of the gases nitrogen (78%), and oxygen (21%). Argon gas and water (in the form of vapor, droplets and ice crystals) are the next most common things. There are also small amounts of other gases, plus many small solid particles, like dust, soot and ashes, pollen, and salt from the oceans.
The composition of the atmosphere varies, depending on your location, the weather, and many other things. There may be more water in the air after a rainstorm, or near the ocean. Volcanoes can put large amounts of dust particles high into the atmosphere. Pollution can add different gases or dust and soot.
The atmosphere is densest (thickest) at the bottom, near the Earth. It gradually thins out as you go higher and higher up. There is no sharp break between the atmosphere and space.
LIGHT WAVES
Light is a kind of energy that radiates, or travels, in waves. Many different kinds of energy travel in waves. For example, sound is a wave of vibrating air. Light is a wave of vibrating electric and magnetic fields. It is one small part of a larger range of vibrating electromagnetic fields. This range is called the electromagnetic spectrum.
Electromagnetic waves travel through space at 299,792 km/sec (186,282 miles/sec). This is called the speed of light.
The energy of the radiation depends on its wavelength and frequency. Wavelength is the distance between the tops (crests) of the waves. Frequency is the number of waves that pass by each second. The longer the wavelength of the light, the lower the frequency, and the less energy it contains.
COLORS OF LIGHT
Visible light is the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that our eyes can see. Light from the sun or a light bulb may look white, but it is actually a combination of many colors. We can see the different colors of the spectrum by splitting the light with a prism. The spectrum is also visible when you see a rainbow in the sky.
The colors blend continuously into one another. At one end of the spectrum are the reds and oranges. These gradually shade into yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. The colors have different wavelengths, frequencies, and energies. Violet has the shortest wavelength in the visible spectrum. That means it has the highest frequency and energy. Red has the longest wavelength, and lowest frequency and energy.
LIGHT IN THE AIR
Light travels through space in a straight line as long as nothing disturbs it. As light moves through the atmosphere, it continues to go straight until it bumps into a bit of dust or a gas molecule. Then what happens to the light depends on its wave length and the size of the thing it hits.
Dust particles and water droplets are much larger than the wavelength of visible light. When light hits these large particles, it gets reflected, or bounced off, in different directions. The different colors of light are all reflected by the particle in the same way. The reflected light appears white because it still contains all of the same colors.
Gas molecules are smaller than the wavelength of visible light. If light bumps into them, it acts differently. When light hits a gas molecule, some of it may get absorbed. After awhile, the molecule radiates (releases, or gives off) the light in a different direction. The color that is radiated is the same color that was absorbed. The different colors of light are affected differently. All of the colors can be absorbed. But the higher frequencies (blues) are absorbed more often than the lower frequencies (reds). This process is called Rayleigh scattering. (It is named after Lord John Rayleigh, an English physicist, who first described it in the 1870's.)
WHY IS THE SKY BLUE?
The blue color of the sky is due to Rayleigh scattering. As light moves through the atmosphere, most of the longer wavelengths pass straight through. Little of the red, orange and yellow light is affected by the air.
However, much of the shorter wavelength light is absorbed by the gas molecules. The absorbed blue light is then radiated in different directions. It gets scattered all around the sky. Whichever direction you look, some of this scattered blue light reaches you. Since you see the blue light from everywhere overhead, the sky looks blue.
As you look closer to the horizon, the sky appears much paler in color. To reach you, the scattered blue light must pass through more air. Some of it gets scattered away again in other directions. Less blue light reaches your eyes. The color of the sky near the horizon appears paler or white.
THE BLACK SKY AND WHITE SUN
On Earth, the sun appears yellow. If you were out in space, or on the moon, the sun would look white. In space, there is no atmosphere to scatter the sun's light. On Earth, some of the shorter wavelength light (the blues and violets) are removed from the direct rays of the sun by scattering. The remaining colors together appear yellow.
Also, out in space, the sky looks dark and black, instead of blue. This is because there is no atmosphere. There is no scattered light to reach your eyes.
WHY IS THE SUNSET RED?
As the sun begins to set, the light must travel farther through the atmosphere before it gets to you. More of the light is reflected and scattered. As less reaches you directly, the sun appears less bright. The color of the sun itself appears to change, first to orange and then to red. This is because even more of the short wavelength blues and greens are now scattered. Only the longer wavelengths are left in the direct beam that reaches your eyes.
The sky around the setting sun may take on many colors. The most spectacular shows occur when the air contains many small particles of dust or water. These particles reflect light in all directions. Then, as some of the light heads towards you, different amounts of the shorter wavelength colors are scattered out. You see the longer wavelengths, and the sky appears red, pink or orange.

My Favourite Book

Basically, I think it is because the school wants to encourage more pupils to read and also make sure the pupils are reading. I like it because I may not have enough time at home to read because I have quite a hectic schedule after school each day. (Except Thursdays) I like reading because I am learning different words without even knowing it compared to being cooped up in my room and doing assessment papers/books. I like to read books that involve solving cases/puzzles like Usborne Mystery books 1,2 and 3. I think it will help me in my school work as it helps me in my language.I love to read the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. I like it basically because Charlie, the boy in the story had won the golden ticket to the newly opened Wonka Chocolate Factory. When he came out of the store, a woman offered him $500 for the ticket. He then went home and said:" Mother, Father, Grandma and Granpa, this ticket is worth alot of money. We need the money more than the chocolate". That sentence means alot to me as it tells me to put others like my parents and realatives before me. Put their needs before my wants.

Total Defence

So how did TOTAL DEFENCE come about ?
There are 2 reasons why this concept was inked and carried out.

Firstly, Singapore is a young nation with a small population and we are unable to afford a regular armed force, thus we need to include every Singapore in the bid to maintain national security in times of crisis.

Secondly, war now is very different from the past and is not longer about attacking using bombs, gunfire and tanks. It can be in non-military ways such as using chemicals, nuclear and viral.

In Short:

TOTAL DEFENCE is not only a defence strategy that can be applied only during times of war but it is a framework for a comprehensive response to deal with all kinds of threats and challenges.

For example during the S.A.R.S period in 2003 and even in our most recent case of Mas Selamat's escape from the detention center. Total defence calls for everyone's participation to ensure Singapore continual survival and success. Everyone has a personal responsibility and a part to play to help keep Singapore safe and secure.

So the next question you may ask is : I'm only a student. How can I be involved ?

Well.......the answer is very simple... we need to take personal responsibility even in seemingly small things.
